Lighting with Speedlights

(Item# LWS)

The Studio of Photographic Arts (theSOPHA.com) presents its one-day class titled “Lighting with Speedlights.” This program shows the ins and outs of using off-camera Speedlights as primary studio lights on location and in the studio. Popularized most recently by the flickr group Strobist (and the companion website and blog found at www.strobist.com), these lightweight AA battery powered Speedlights are workhorses.

We will start at the beginning from forming shot concepts, equipment selection, and metering and work through typical lighting challenges and assignments. We will use Nikon, Canon, and Vivitar Speedlights along with Pocket Wizards, their off-shore counterparts, and the Nikon Creative Lighting System. We will exploit the advantages of these little lights, and discuss their limitations as well. This class will be half lecture/discussion/demonstration, and half hands-on shooting.

What you need to know
Participants must have a basic understanding of exposures, and be able to make those adjustments in manual mode on their camera (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). Previous experience with studio lighting and exposures is very helpful, but not required. Students may choose to familiarize themselves with the material on the website strobist.com for more background on the off-camera speedlight phenomenon.

What you need to bring
You will need an SLR (digital preferred) to get the most out of this class. It should have a standard ISO hot shoe. (Note Sony and Minolta DSLRs are non-standard and you should give us a call for more information.) Be sure to have a fully charged battery, memory cards, and a lens with a focal length of 50mm to 70mm or so, although most folks will have a lens in their bag which will work well. If you have a speed light, especially one with a PC sync socket, be sure to bring that along as well – the more lights, the merrier!

What is included
Lunch and model fees are included in the course cost.
